Back on Track: 2020 Toyota Supra

The 2020 Supra made its official debut at the 2019 Detroit auto show. The car had already made at least one public appearance — albeit in heavy camouflage — at the Goodwill Festival of Speed in West Sussex, England, last summer.

The cockpit’s asymmetrical center console, small-diameter wheel, low, narrow-section dashboard, and single-meter digital instrument panel were designed to enhance forward visibility and cornering feel.

The Supra’s signature “double bubble” roof was designed to maximize headroom while minimizing drag.

Pricing for the 2020 Toyota Supra starts at $49,990 for the base 3.0 model and $53,990 for 3.0 Premium editions, not including delivery.

The new car was designed to honor Toyota’s racing heritage, including the 1967 2000 GT.

The 2020 Supra is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6 delivering 335 horsepower, 365 pound-feet of torque, and a projected zero-to-60 time of 4.1 seconds, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Japanese dealers will also get a 2.0 turbo edition.

The first production model of the 2020 Supra is a special matte gray edition that sold for $2.1 million at a Barrett-Jackson charity auction. Factory paint choices are limited to red, white, and black.

The Toyota Supra will arrive in North American dealerships this summer for the first time since 1998, when U.S. sales of the fourth-generation model ended. Canadian dealers last saw the Supra in 1996, and the ’98 was not sold in California. Production continued in Japan until 2000.

A limited Launch Edition based on the 3.0 Premium and boasting unique color schemes (and Akio Toyoda’s replica signature) will account for the first 1,500 Supras sold in the U.S.

The Supra gets standard 19-inch forged alloy wheels and Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. The rear tires (275/35R19) are wider than those in front (255/35R19) for superior grip.
