Reports of nearly 50 vehicle fires have led Ford to recall more than 59,000 units.

The vehicles, which range from the 2016 to 2024 model years, can develop a coolant leak in the engine block heater, leading to a short circuit when plugged in.

Ford recalled the following models:

  • 2016 to 2019 Lincoln MKC

  • 2016 to 2023 Ford Explorer

  • 2019 to 2020 Ford Fusion

  • 2019 to 2024 Ford Ranger

  • 2020 to 2022 Lincoln Corsair and Ford Escape

  • 2021 to 2024 Bronco and Bronco Sport

  • 2022 to 2024 Ford Maverick

Due to increased fire risk and potential block heater damage, the automaker warns owners of the vehicles to hold off on plugging in their block heaters until they have them replaced.

Warning signs of the problem include coolant spots on pavement, loss of cabin heat, power train unit overheating, a low-coolant warning indicator, and odor or smoke.

Ford was working on a new block heater design and planned to mail safety notices to owners on Oct. 24. Recall notices will follow, likely in February, the company said in documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
