A new automotive recall search tool is designed to make it easier for consumers to check whether recalls have been issued for their models.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recalls search page now includes a license plate field to search for a specific vehicle, in addition to vehicle identification number, make and model.

It announced the added capability this week, which is Vehicle Safety Recalls Week through March 10, urging owners to search for their vehicles on its website and get any listed repaired as soon as possible, emphasizing that all recall repairs are done free of charge.

The federal agency further recommended twice-annual checks to make sure none are missed, suggesting doing so when the time changes in the fall and spring.

It’s also making more than $4 million in grants available to states, with applications accepted through May 6, to publicize open recalls when people register their vehicles or renew registrations.
