Mitsubishi recalled more than 91,000 SUVs because their liftgates could fail, potentially causing injuries.

The 2014 to 2020 Outlanders and 2018 to 2022 Outlander PHEVs could experience gas spring cylinder ruptures of liftgate failure, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Mitsubishi estimates 1% of the vehicle population has the defect. The SUVs were sold or are registered in 27 states and Washington, D.C. The states are:

Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin

The problem stems from liftgate gas spring cylinders losing pressure after corroding as a result of salt-water exposure, raising the risk of cylinder rupture or the liftgate falling.

The Japanese automaker’s dealers will replace the liftgate gas springs. It’s scheduled to mail recall notices to owners on Oct. 6.
